Frames, shutters, uPVC and aluminium windows.
Doors and windows decide security, ventilation, noise and the face of the house. Frames (chaukhat) go in early; shutters and windows come after plaster.
The basics
- Frames are hardwood, WPC or steel; shutters are solid wood, flush or membrane.
- uPVC and aluminium have replaced wooden windows in most new homes.
- Typical sizes: main door 1,050×2,100 mm, rooms 900×2,100, bathrooms 750×2,100.

Quality checks before you accept delivery
- Timber moisture below 12% — seasoned wood doesn't warp.
- Flush doors: IS mark, BWP core; heavier is usually better.
- uPVC profiles should be lead-free with galvanised steel inside.
- Stand the door against a straight wall to check for warping.
- Check solid wood for knots, cracks and borer holes.
- Operate window handles and locks through full cycles.
Pro tips
- Treat wooden frames with anti-termite preservative before fixing; use WPC frames in bathrooms.
- Measure window openings after plaster, not from drawings.
- Specify toughened glass for sliding doors and large panes.
- Make the main door at least 1,050 mm wide for moving furniture.
- Add kick plates or edge bands on bathroom doors.
- Hang shutters after flooring so the bottom gap is right.
- Add weatherstripping to the main door.
Mistakes to avoid
- Wooden bathroom frames without WPC or protection.
- Ordering windows from drawings instead of site measurement.
- No drip moulding over exterior windows.
- Fixing doors in unseasoned frames.
- Covering gaps with filler instead of proper fitting.

- Teak only for the main door; laminated flush doors inside.
- Standard sizes avoid custom charges.
