Drainage, septic and rainwater — price, types and what to check
Chambers, traps, septic tanks and rainwater harvesting.
What leaves the house matters as much as what comes in. Chambers, traps, septic tanks and rainwater harvesting keep sewage moving and put roof water back into the ground.
The basics
- Where a municipal sewer exists, house lines run through inspection chambers into it.
- Without a sewer, a septic tank with a soak pit treats waste on site.
- Many cities make rainwater harvesting mandatory above a set plot size — check your local bylaws.

Quality checks before you accept delivery
- Chambers should be smooth inside with rounded channels (benching).
- Cover rating must match the load — medium duty under driveways.
- Septic tanks need two compartments, a vent pipe and a soak pit or outlet.
- Check slope with a spirit level on every run before backfilling.
- Covers should seat flat without rocking.
- Pour water into every floor trap to confirm the water seal holds.
Pro tips
- Place a chamber at every junction and change of direction.
- Keep septic tanks and soak pits well away from any well or borewell — 15 m or more is common guidance.
- Test drain slopes with water before closing trenches.
- Send roof water through a first-flush diverter and filter before the recharge pit.
- Fit a grease trap on the kitchen line before it joins the main drain.
- Provide a clean-out at the foot of every vertical stack.
Mistakes to avoid
- Connecting rainwater pipes to the sewer — it overloads the system and is banned in many cities.
- Building the septic tank under the car park where it can't be desludged.
- Skipping traps, letting sewer gas and cockroaches into the house.
- Letting construction debris and cement slurry into drain lines.
- Sharp 90° bends in buried lines — use two 45° bends.
Where you can save
- Plastic chambers save labour days and don't leak.
- Route filtered rainwater to your sump to top up storage in monsoon.
How much you need
One inspection chamber at every junction and direction change.
