Laminate, engineered wood, SPC vinyl, epoxy and decking.
Warmer and quieter than stone, wood-look floors come as laminate, engineered wood and waterproof vinyl. Epoxy suits garages and utility areas.
The basics
- Laminate is HDF with a printed wood layer; engineered wood has a real wood veneer on top.
- SPC vinyl is waterproof and safe for kitchens and ground floors.
- Most are floating floors that click together over an underlay.

Quality checks before you accept delivery
- Laminate should be AC4 or higher for living areas.
- Base floor must be dry and flat within about 3 mm over 2 m.
- Leave boxes in the room 48 hours before laying.
- Check click edges on a few planks — broken tongues won't lock.
- Confirm the wear-layer thickness on engineered wood and vinyl.
- Open several boxes to compare colour.
Pro tips
- Leave 8–10 mm gaps at walls, hidden under skirting.
- Lay a polythene moisture barrier under laminate on ground floors.
- Undercut door frames so planks slide underneath.
- Put doormats at every entrance to catch grit.
- Use felt pads on chair and table legs.
Mistakes to avoid
- Laminate in bathrooms — the HDF core swells.
- Daily wet mopping on wood floors.
- Skipping underlay, leaving a hollow sound.
- Dragging furniture across the floor.
- Laying over screed that hasn't fully dried.

- Laminate and SPC can go over existing tiles — no demolition.
