Beds and mattresses — price, types and what to check
Single, double, queen and king beds, storage beds, bunks and mattresses.
You spend a third of your life in bed. Pick the size for the room and people, the storage for Indian homes, and a mattress that suits your back — not the other way round.
The basics
- Common Indian sizes: single 3 × 6.25 ft, double 4–4.5 × 6.25 ft, queen 5 × 6.5 ft (60 × 78 in), king 6 × 6.5 ft (72 × 78 in).
- Storage beds come with box (lift-up panels) or hydraulic lift for easy access.
- Mattress types: pocket spring, memory foam, latex, coir and hybrid.

Quality checks before you accept delivery
- Lie on the mattress in your sleeping position for at least ten minutes.
- Check bed slats or plywood base — solid support stops mattress sag.
- Hydraulic pistons should lift smoothly and hold the base open without dropping.
- Measure the mattress against the bed's inner frame before buying separately.
- Look for a clear mattress warranty that covers sagging beyond a stated depth.
- Headboard and joints should not creak when you sit on the edge.
Pro tips
- Leave at least 2 ft of walking space on both sides and at the foot of the bed.
- In humid regions, a ventilated base (slats) keeps mattresses fresh.
- Flip or rotate the mattress every three months for the first year.
- Keep the bed away from the AC's direct airflow.
- Queen is the best-fitting size for most 10 × 11 ft Indian master bedrooms.
Mistakes to avoid
- A king bed squeezed into a small room with no space to walk.
- Mattress smaller than the bed frame, leaving gaps.
- Buying an ultra-soft mattress that strains the back.
- Heavy storage beds without hydraulics — impossible to lift daily.
- Bunk beds without guard rails on the top bunk.
Where you can save
- A box storage bed costs less than hydraulic and still stores out-of-season items.
- Mattress prices dip heavily during festive and year-end sales.
How much you need
Room should be at least bed width + 4 ft, and bed length + 2.5 ft.
