TMT steel — price, types and what to check
Reinforcement inside every column, beam and slab.
Concrete is strong in compression but weak in tension. TMT bars carry the tension, and their quality decides how your building behaves in an earthquake.
The basics
- TMT means Thermo-Mechanically Treated — a hard outer skin with a ductile core.
- Fe500 is the residential standard; Fe500D and Fe550D bend more before breaking, which matters in seismic zones.
- Common diameters are 8, 10, 12, 16, 20 and 25 mm, sold by weight.
TMT steel types and price ranges in India
| Type | Specification | Best used for | Indicative price |
|---|---|---|---|
| Fe500 TMT | IS 1786 | General residential RCC | ₹55–68 |
| Fe500D TMT | IS 1786, ductile | Seismic zones III–V, columns | ₹58–72 |
| Fe550D TMT | IS 1786 | Heavy loads, multi-storey | ₹60–75 |
| Corrosion-resistant TMT | CRS | Coastal and humid areas | ₹62–80 |
| Binding wire | 18–20 gauge annealed | Tying rebars | ₹75–100 |
| Cover blocks | 20–50 mm | Maintaining concrete cover | ₹2–6 |
Quality checks before you accept delivery
- Every bar should be rolled with brand, grade and diameter.
- Ask for the mill test certificate for each lot.
- Check weight: a 12 mm bar should weigh about 0.89 kg per metre.
- No rust flakes, cracks or damaged ribs.
- Bend-test a sample: bent around a mandrel, it should show no cracks.
- Ribs should be uniform along the bar, with no scale pits.
- The grade rolled on the bar must match the invoice.
Pro tips
- Unit weight is d²/162 kg per metre (d in mm): 8 mm 0.395, 10 mm 0.617, 12 mm 0.888, 16 mm 1.58.
- Clear cover: 50 mm footings, 40 mm columns, 25 mm beams, 15–20 mm slabs.
- Lap length is about 50–60 × bar diameter. Stagger laps — never lap all bars at one section.
- Bend TMT cold. Heating a bar to bend it destroys its treated skin.
- Cut and bend to the bar-bending schedule (BBS) from your engineer.
- Cover stacked steel with plastic during monsoon.
- Use chairs to hold top slab steel at the right height.
- Place extra top steel over supports exactly as drawn.
Mistakes to avoid
- Wrong stirrup spacing near beam–column joints.
- Stirrup hooks without 135° bends in seismic zones.
- Walking on slab steel before concreting, pushing it to the bottom.
- Re-rolled or unbranded TMT.
- Welding bars together instead of lapping, unless your engineer specifies it.
Where you can save
- Cut-and-bend service reduces offcut waste and labour.
- Pay by actual weight on a certified scale, not by 'standard' bundle weight.
How much you need
About 3.5–4.5 kg per sq ft of built-up area.
